Floating canal shop frozen in
09 December 2010

By David Simister

The Patty Ann - ice bound on the canal at Lathom Slipway.

A couple who use their narrowboat as a floating shop have been unable to get to their customers - because the craft is stuck in the frozen canal.

Colin and Carole Wareing, of Burscough, were planning to use their boat to travel up the Leeds and Liverpool canal to sell their wool products, but their plans had to be frozen after the boat became stuck in the thickening ice.

“It is possible to cruise through a thin layer of ice but once it gets this thick it is difficult for the engine to drive the boat forwards, and there is a risk of damage to the hull.

”There is also a danger of the ice breaking up in sheets and damaging other vessels, especially the fibreglass cruisers,“ Colin Wareing told The Champion.

”We planned to return to Rufford last weekend and then Tarleton midweek before being in Parbold this coming weekend.“

The couple's boat, the Patty Ann, is now stuck at its present mooring outside the Slipway Pub, on Crabtree Lane and is unlikely to move again until the weather warms up enough to allow the ice surrounding the boat's hull to melt.

As Colin and Carole may not be able to get to Parbold for a planned event this weekend they are now offering a delivery service of knitting supplies, yarn and wool direct to their customers' doors, delivered either by post or directly by car.

Ordinarily, the couple would cruise along locations along the canal in the boat, and visit West Lancashire at least once a month.

The shop will also continue to operate from the Patty Ann, despite it being stuck, with customers advised to visit out side the Slipway pub on Crabtree Lane, which can still be accessed by road. The boat will be open for business from 11am-4pm on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
