  • Thousands of hand-knitted poppies donated to store

    Danielle Thompson

THOUSANDS of hand-knitted poppies were donated to WH Smith, after an appeal in the Champion led to a wave of the hand-made symbols of the First World War being created.

The store says around 4,000-5,000 were handed in and then stitched onto a hessian backing. Store staff were helped by members of the public, the 10th Southport Boy’s Brigade and Girls Association and Linaker Primary School staff and pupils. There were too many to be added to the hanging and these were sold in store during the weekend, raising £1,000 for the Royal British Legion, whose Southport branch are keeping the decoration after it is taken down from the Chapel Street store at the end of November.

Staff member Emma Smith said: “We were overwhelmed and so touched by the amazing amount of donations we were given.”
