  • Conference will highlight support for vets with mental health and fitness issues

    Henry James

MEMBERS of the Skelmersdale Veterans’ Association have organised a Walking Football conference when they will also be  providing support to former members of the armed forces on issues including mental health and fitness.

The event will be held at the Evermoor Hub Community Centre in Digmoor from 12.30 to 5.30pm on Saturday (February 16).

The association is currently running a monthly walking football session at the Hub working closely with Ian Gaskell from Wigan Athletic Community Trust.

Alan Lewis from the Skelmersdale Veterans’ Association said: “We would like to invite all veterans to our conference. The idea is that the event will provide them with motivation to get fit.

“Also, those who come will be able to make new friends and it will give them the chance to meet other agencies that can support them on issues such as PTSD and other mental health issues.

“The event is open to any veteran or family member and has been organised thanks to the strong partnership between our association and the Wigan Athletic Community Trust. It will be the first of its kind in West Lancashire.”

Among the agencies to be represented on the day will be the Royal British Legion and the Help for Heroes charity and a TA Reservist Unit from St Helens will also attend and will be bringing along a display of weapons, including heavy guns.

Meanwhile, the veterans’ walking football team are looking for companies to sponsor them. Anyone who can help or who would like to put a five-a-side team together, can contact Alan Lewis on SVACHAIR@OUTLOOK.COM or by ringing 07939 660048.
