  • Pledge to tighten up security at vandal-plagued former college site

    Henry James

SECURITY is to be stepped up at a former college site in the town following a spate of suspected arson attacks.

Last week’s Champion reported that firefighters had been called to the former Westbank Campus, formerly used by West Lancashire College, on four occasions to deal with fires which they believed had been started deliberately.

The site in Yewdale in the town centre is now owned by the NCG group.

Following the recent incidents a spokesperson for the NCG group told the Champion: “Due to the increased number of arson attacks at the site we plan to increase the security presence on site and install additional physical security measures around the buildings to further control the situation.

“We are still in talks with the local authority with regard to the long-term future of the site.”

Following the fires, Lancashire Fire Brigade bosses hit out at the “stupidity” of the people behind the incidents, saying: “Whoever is responsible for these fires is endangering themselves and the lives of firefighters who are having to go into these buildings.”

Meanwhile Skelmersdale North Councillor Neil Furey reiterated his call for the buildings to be demolished.

Firefighters had been called to the site to deal with similar incidents in February and last November.

West Lancs Council has sent officers to access the security of the buildings and will also be contacting the landowner with a “view to arranging any necessary works to be carried out.”
