Mayor launches Wharf
by Henry James

THE people behind the £3m Burscough Wharf project beat the recession to open the new leisure and retail development on schedule.

Special guests and residents attended the Grand Opening at the centre in the heart of Burscough Village over the last weekend.

The Wharf links the Leeds Liverpool canal to the centre of Burscough. A total of 12,000 square feet of existing canalside buildings have been refurbished and developed to create new shops and restaurants, run by local entrepreneurs.

The mayor of West Lancashire, Cllr John Baldock officially opened the development on Friday, February 11 and said it was a “great enhancement” to West Lancashire.

Visitors who attended the Wharf throughout the weekend were able to see live music and entertainment. Among the acts were McDonalds Dance Academy and balloon modeller Shaun Sweet.

The canalside development came about through a partnership between property developers Thomas Guy Ltd and local group Burscough Moving Forward.

Roger Bell, chairman of Burscough Moving Forward said: “The opening is a fruition of a long dream, I think the Wharf will put Burscough on the map.

”It has come about through a unique combination of private investment and the work of the voluntary sector.“

He is now calling on residents to use the development. ”I want the local community to get involved with what is happening at the Wharf,“ he said. ”I want people to create their own events.

“People should come and visit the Wharf and we will support any plans people may have.”
