Cash boost to allow disabled to use centre
by David Simister

A COMMUNITY centre in Skelmersdale has been given a cash boost to allow disabled residents to take full advantage of its facilities.

Skelmersdale East County Councillor Carolyn Evans, the county council's champion for disabled people, visited Digmoor Community Centre to make a donation of £760 to the centre's representative, which will be spent on making the site easier for residents with disabilities to access.

“In my role of champion for disabled people, I want to make a genuinely tangible difference to improve the lives of disabled people in Lancashire,” she said.

“This funding will give people with disabilities access to a facility and services in their local community, which previously wouldn't have been available.”

The money will be used to enable local disabled people to use the facilities at the centre. In addition to paying for the hire of a room, it will also fund an Xbox Kinect and other games suitable for disabled people.

Margaret Highton, chairperson of the community centre added:

“I would like to thank Carolyn for her superb help with this. The money means we can open up the centre for disabled people in March, without having to worry about raising the money ourselves.

”The centre will be open for groups of disabled people for one night a week until October, during which time we'll do some fundraising with a view to keeping it going for longer.“
