Cameras roll for battle of The Bec
by David Simister

THE cameras have been rolling in a West Lancashire village after filmmakers arrived to chronicle the battle to save an historic pub.

Sheffield-based production company Sort Of... Films spent yesterday (Tuesday) making a documentary which focuses on the decline of community pubs, and The Becconsall Hotel, on Station Road Hesketh Bank, will feature prominently because of the public support for its survival.

Una McBride, of the Save The Bec Campaign, appealed in anopen letter to the village's residents to get involved through chats on camera recalling good times at The Bec.

She also wanted people to say how they felt about the demise of local pubs in general.

In January Sort Of... Films told The Champion they were looking to feature The Becconsall, which closed in 2009 and has since been threatened with demolition, because it has a very strong campaign behind it.

“The documentary is intended to be a campaign film to be shown on the festival circuit, and we're hoping to get an audience of between 20,000 and 30,000 people for it, including lots of executives from the pub and brewery industries,” said Ed Cartledge, the film company's spokesman.
