Teacher honoured for work on American trip
by David Simister

A TEACHER from Parbold with a passion for politics was presented with a flag to honour her achievements during a visit with her students to the United States.

Elaine Mulroy, a tutor at Winstanley College, Up Holland, was presented with a flag while on a trip with her students to Washington DC, as an award for her service to politics at the college and for promoting an interest in US politics.

A spokesperson for the college said: “Winstanley College Politics teacher Elaine Mulroy has been honoured with an award for her long service to politics at the college and for promoting an interest in American politics.

”An honorary flag was presented to her in the conference room of House Democratic Whip, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland in the Capitol building. Another flag was also awarded to the college for continued promotion and development of the study of American politics.“

The flag presentation was paid for by collections from her students and arranged by politics departmental assistant and former Winstanley student Tom Lynan, who was an intern in Congress and often arranged flag ordering for similar events during his time there.

”Seeing as we were going back to America on the trip I thought it would be nice to get Elaine a flag in honour of her running the trip for many years and her long service to politics at Winstanley College. Unfortunately I asked too late to have the flag flown, but through my contact I was able to get an unflown flag along with a letter from the House Democratic Whip, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, saying the flag is in ‘honor' of her continued service to politics at Winstanley College. The flag was paid for from a collection of the students,“ he said.

”I presented the flag to Elaine in the conference room of the Democratic Whip in the Capitol building, after a meeting I had organised with Congressman Hoyer's Chief of Staff Terry Lierman. So it wasn't so much an award but a gift from everyone on the trip to thank Elaine for running the trip every year and for her long service to politics at Winstanley. As well as a flag for Elaine, I also bought a flag for the Politics department.“

The Winstanley group also visited New York as part of their trip, which aimed to give the students a better understanding of American politics.
