Swan 'abduction attempt'
by anon

A MYSTERY man tried to take a swan from the side of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, a concerned reader has reported to The Champion this week.

Burscough resident Patricia Cornell said that residents had seen a man attempt to put a bag over the head of a swan and remove it from the canal pathway where it runs through the town, but ran off after realising his actions were being watched.

“I usually walk my dog along the canal in Burscough and there's a pair of swans there, and a person I spoke to told me they'd seen a man go up to one of the swans, put a bag over its head and try to take it away,” she said.

“This must have been really frightening for the birds involved if something like this were to happen to them, and I'd be really upset if someone were to come back and actually take them. Some people out there obviously think these birds are just things there for the taking, but that's clearly not the case.”
