Tarleton five to take on London Marathon
by David Simister

FIVE friends from the same West Lancashire village to take on one of Britain's toughest marathons to help tackle motor neurone disease.

David Cropper, John and Rosin Dickinson, and Ann Palmer and her son, Matt Palmer, are to take on the London Marathon on April 17, in the latest of a series of runs inspired by David's wife Rachel, who lives with the mobility-restricting disease.

“For the last two years our merry band have enjoyed the challenge of pushing Rachel around the Great North Run, with both occasions being very different and bringing new experiences. Rachel was so inspired this time she walked the last mile,” the five runners, who all hail from Tarleton, said in a statement on their JustGiving fundraising website.

“We decided to up the ante, and managed to secure some valuable Golden Bond places in the 2011 London Marathon in an effort to raise even more money and awareness for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, whose tireless work we hope will one day bring an end to this insufferable disease.”

Unfortunately the group are unable to repeat their feat from the Great North Run of pushing Rachel around the 26-mile-route of the London Marathon, due to health and safety reasons, but have decided to take part in the event to raise more funds for the charity, and as this week's Champion have raised nearly £12,000 after hosting a series of fundraising events.

If you'd like to give your support to David, John, Rosin, Ann and Matt as they prepare to take on the London Marathon, go online and visit to make a donation. The London Marathon will be broadcast live on BBC One.
