Burscough Wharf to host canal heritage weekend
by David Simister

THE team behind the recently-opened Burscough Wharf have announced this week they are to host a weekend delving into the history of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Gill Draper, one of the team of volunteers who helped make last month's opening of the leisure development a success, said this week that local schools and residents are being urged to get involved in a new heritage week, scheduled to take place between June 20 and 26.

“To celebrate the successful opening of Burscough Canal Wharf, plans are in progress to hold a canal week to demonstrate the importance of the Wharf and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to Burscough and the surrounding villages,” she said.

“Local schools will be visiting the Wharf during the first part of the week, to learn about the heritage and the history of the canal and its people. The weekend will be dedicated to the general public. Attractions will include visiting barges, entertainment, historical talks, displays and local crafts, it is hoped if successful this will be an annual Burscough event.”

The event organisers told The Champion they would be grateful to any West Lancashire residents for the loan of any old photographs or artefacts relating to Burscough , the canal and its people, such as clothing, crafts, boat and horse memorabilia that they may be able to offer. These would be displayed throughout the week at the Burscough Wharf, and used to help give West Lancashire residents and pupils an insight into the role the canal played in the region's economy in decades gone by.

The revived Burscough Wharf development, situated alongside the canal as it passes through Burscough, opened on Saturday, February 12 and offers visitors a mix of eateries, craft and creative stores and other independent retailers.
