Filming of pub documentary a success in Hesketh Bank
by David Simister

A FILM crew's visit to West Lancashire to make a documentary about the battle to save a village pub has been a big success, campaigners have told The Champion.

Members of Save The Bec campaign said this week that a visit by a film crew working for Sheffield-based company Sort Of... Films had been well received by residents, who took part in a series of interviews during a filming day in Hesketh Bank last Tuesday (March 15).

“Filming went well in the village, the film crew seemed to be pleased but I don’t know what it will look like after it’s all been edited,” said Una McBride of Save The Bec Campaign, which is campaigning against the demolition of the Becconsall Hotel on Station Road, which closed in 2009.

“They were filming me filming locals as I interviewed them. The interviews are about happy times at The Bec and how they feel about its closure will become an historical record of some sort.”

The Champion approached Sort Of... Films, whose film crews were in the village as part of efforts to create a documentary about the closure of village pubs and how they affect nearby communities, but nobody from the firm was available to comment before this week's edition went to press.

However, spokesman Ed Cartledge has previously told The Champion that the finished documentary is intended to be a campaign film to be shown on the festival circuit, and are hoping to get an audience of between 20,000 and 30,000, including executives from the pub and brewery industries.

Save The Bec Campaign is now calling on any residents with old photos and any old film footage, which may be of use for the next part of the film's creation, to get involved.

The next part of the filming is expected to take place in April.
