Young football stars wanted to form new town team
by David Simister

BUDDING young Beckhams who live in Skelmersdale are being invited by a class one referee to help form a new football team for the town.

Les Crompton, who works as a support worker at the Birchwood Centre, on Heversham, is calling on any aspiring young footballers to help him form a new team, which will be based at the Skelmersdale Sports Centre in Digmoor.

“We used to run the teams at St John’s Playing fields but, as the winter dark nights set in we moved to the Skem Sports Centre where it's been running very successfully indeed,” he said.

“Recently we applied for, and received, positive activities funding from Young People’s Service and because of this financial support we will be able to provide top level training for up to twenty four young people.”

Mr Crompton will be spending some time visiting local schools in order to scout for local talented individuals, but has urged anyone who thinks they have a talent for football to get in touch, because he will be able to train 24 lucky players, free of charge, on Friday evenings between 8pm and 9pm.

“Stella Connell, manager of the Birchwood Centre said: ”As well as our core role, which is to provide temporary supported accommodation for young, single homeless people aged between 16-25 years of age; we are always looking for ways to offer young people in our local community a very real alternative to just hanging around on street corners.

“We are very excited and proud of what Les has been able to accomplish.”

For further information about the Birchwood Centre and the services they provide, contact Les Crompton or Stella Connell on 01695 717115.
