Ian runs in Paris tribute to friend's memory
by David Simister

A CHARITY runner pounded the streets of Paris to raise more than £1,500 in memory of a friend who passed away last month.

Hundreds of village residents paid tribute to Kathryn Curran at a packed funeral after she lost her brave battle with cancer.

Former classmate Ian McConnell, who was joined by two unversity friends, ran the Paris marathon in her honour.

He said: I’ve known Kathryn since I was 11 years old when we sat next to each other making scones in our school home economics class. Attending her funeral all these years later a very sad and emotional experience.

“At the same time it was also inspiring to see all of Kathryn’s friends and family get together and talk about all the great memories. What was clear to me is that not only was Kathryn an amazing person, but she was also an inspiration to many people.”

She leaves behind husband Phil and three young children Evie, George and Tom.

He added: “I decided that if my plodding around the streets of Paris could help even raise a small amount of cash to support one of her favourite charities then that can be no bad thing. So I ran the Paris marathon in memory of Kathryn, and in support of the charity Building Hope.”

He raised a total of £1,541.40. The Building Hope charity was supported by Kathryn and it is helping the construction of homes for 24 families affected by leprosy in the town of Dessie, in Ethiopia.
