School is hailed for quality of pupil support
by David Simister

A SKELMERSDALE school is one of a handful from across the county which has been praised for giving an extra helping hand to its pupils.

St John’s Roman Catholic Primary School, on Flamstead in Birch Green, was one of eight schools to be awarded Quality in Study Support accreditation, which Lancashire County Council said this week helps to recognise schools which go a step further to help their students and attempt to provide a wider range of learning facilities.

Principal adviser Mike Snelson said: “The schools and centres are to be congratulated on providing an extensive range of high quality extended learning opportunities for their pupils.

”The children and young people will have benefited greatly from taking part in these activities which contribute to raising educational achievement, help to improve motivation and broaden horizons.“

There are now 14 schools and organisations with QiSS accreditation within Lancashire, including All Saints Primary School in nearby Appley Bridge.

The local authority added that Quality in Study Support is a process which is used nationwide to monitor and evaluate the quality of study support in schools and study centres.

”Lancashire County Council has been doing the same to assess the provision they offer to make learning fun and support study through all areas of the curriculum.

“This means that schools offer a wide variety of activities, not just within the school day, but at lunchtimes, after school and during holidays to extend and enrich the curriculum for pupils. Young people have improved their skills and widened their horizons through a wide variety of clubs, projects, visitors to schools and excursions.”
