Pensioners pedal coast to coast in charity challenge
by Stephanie O'Connor

TWO pensioners from Formby have completed a gruelling 200 mile coast to coast bike ride, accompanied by their two dogs.

Carrie and Mike Roberts cycled from Formby to Whitely Bay while towing their beloved pets terriers, Russell and Lily over some of the hilliest terrain in the country including Shap in Cumbria, and the Hadrian’s Wall military Road.

The couple decided to do the sponsored cycle to raise much needed funds for Freshfield Animal Sanctuary.

Carrie said: “The terriers travelled in style in pet carriers on trailers pulled behind the bikes. Russell was towed by Mike, and the slightly lighter Lily by me.

”We dug very deep into our physical, mental and emotional reserves to do the ride, and we sincerely hope that animal lovers throughout the region will dig into their pockets to support Freshfield. There are probably no other terriers in the country who have done this ride, or found two adults mad enough to pull them.“

If you would like to meet Russell and Lily and their minders, they will be at the Freshfields Spring Fair and Fun Dog Show in Hightown on 29th May, where they will hand over donations received so far.
