School pupils are a picture of health
by David Simister

HEALTH-CONSCIOUS youngsters from across West Lancashire have bagged cash prizes for their schools after impressing the county council's chairman with a series of innovative schemes.

Students from primary and high schools across the borough managed to secure prizes from a panel led by County Councillor Chris Holtom, Chairman of Lancashire County Council, at the finals of the Chairman's Challenge contest, held last Thursday (May 19) at County Hall in Preston.

County Councillor Holtom said: “Yesterday's final has to be one of the highlights of my year in office. I saw some amazing presentations. I very much enjoyed meeting the young people, their parents and teachers. I circled this event on my calendar because the aim of getting young people and their families to lead healthy and safe lifestyles from an early age couldn't be any more important.

”I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work and commitment to ensuring the event went so well. In particular, I'd like to pay tribute to the young people for taking part, their parents and teachers and the Healthy Schools team for organising the event.“

Among the West Lancashire schools who managed to impress the panel were Pinfold Primary School in Scarisbrick, who managed to win £150 after giving their presentation, entitled ”Growing Gourmet Grub and ……Where does bacon come from?“.

Other winners from West Lancashire including Little Digmoor School, based in Skelmersdale, West Lancashire Community High School, also based in Skelmersdale, and the Acorns Centre, based in Ormskirk, who each won £50 after winning Highly Commended awards in the contest.

Four schools elsewhere in Lancashire each won the £1,000 top prizes in their categories in the competition, which was designed to encourage young people to think about being healthy and safe.
