Motorist hit with £315 costs for throwing cig butt from car
by David Raven

A SEAFORTH smoker was forced to cough up over £300 when she was caught throwing a cigarette end out of the window of a moving car.

Sefton Council environmental workers noted down Nicola Garrett's licence plate after spotting the incident.

On Thursday at South Sefton Magistrates the Ewart Road resident was ordered to pay a total cost of £315.

After failing to pay her initial fixed penalty fine of £75 following the incident in October last year, Ms Garrett was told to pay up costs of £200, on top of a £100 fine and a £15 victim surcharge.

Sefton Council are keen to use her as an example to warn anyone else who is considering dropping litter in a public place in the borough.

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, anyone seen or caught dropping litter can be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £75. This also includes throwing waste out of a vehicle.

If a person is seen dropping litter from a vehicle, the car registration details can be noted and a fixed penalty notice later issued to the offender.

If they fail to pay the fine or are persistent offenders, legal proceedings will follow.

Cabinet member environmental, Councillor Simon Shaw, said: “Residents need to realise that dropping litter, even out of cars, is not acceptable behaviour.

”Dropping any form of litter is illegal and anti-social. People need to understand that they are responsible for correctly disposing of their own waste.

“Court cases like this highlight what can happen if you are caught. I hope it will make people think twice before just throwing their waste on the ground or out of a vehicle.”
