'Social highlight' Waterloo Dinner tickets now on sale
by Henry James

THE Waterloo Dinner is to be held once again at The Royal Hotel in Waterloo on Saturday, June 18.

It is hoped the dinner will become a social highlight for Waterloo and eventually organisers are aiming to create a Waterloo Day where businesses and locals will celebrate Waterloo’s proud history with annual events.

The Traditional Waterloo Dinner dates back to 1816, the year following the Battle of Waterloo. Annual celebratory dinners were held on June 18 at the hotel, then called the Royal Waterloo Hotel - until late Victorian Times. The first dinners were started by John Gladstone, father of Prime Minister William Gladstone.

The district of Waterloo actually acquired its name from the hotel: up till 1835 the area was called Crosby Seabank, which was the intended name for the Hotel while being built for Samuel Towers, who changed his mind in 1815 after Wellington ’s famous Victory.

Arrival will be 7.30pm for an 8pm dinner. Tickets are available from reception.
