Venue switch for protest meeting
by David Simister

A PROTEST group's meeting to debate a legal move to save the village police point will now be held in a nearby pub after the organisers were forced to change the venue.

The Champion reported that a group of Aughton residents had launched a bid to save the police facility at Town Green Railway Station, which will see them trying to force the parish council to take over the site's lease by holding a republic referendum on the issue.

The group's meeting to discuss the issue will still be held on Monday, September 26 at 7.30pm, but due to the the village hall being unavailable, the event will now be held at the Town Green Inn, on Town Green Lane.

Meeting organiser Alan Lenton and other residents believe the parish council could be forced to take on the lease for the police point under Section 17 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

This states that bodies such as the parish council have a duty to reduce crime and disorder, and that allowing the police station to close is in breach of this legislation.

The residents contend the council has money in its reserves to do this.

The Aughton site is one of several Lancashire Constabulary are looking to close as part of controversial proposals to cut its costs. The outcome of a consultation on the issue of West Lancashire's police stations is expected to be published later this year.
