Crosby film festival delves into gay issues
by David Simister

A FILM festival exploring the issues gay people face is returning to Crosby's Plaza Cinema next week in a bid to raise awareness among the region's residents.

The organisers of the OPEN Film Festival, which opens at the Crosby Road North cinema next Monday (November 7) said that a selection of screenings and discussions by guest speakers will help to explore issues including sexuality, ‘coming-out’ and homophobia as part of efforts to garner more acceptance and understanding of gay culture in the north west.

Danny Kilbride, the festival's creative director, said:

“OPEN is a small Festival, but an important one nevertheless, demonstrated by The Prince’s Trust’s involvement and the amount of interest from local schools.

”The 2011 Festival will reach more young-people than 2010 and plans are well underway to expand screenings in the New Year.“

Mr Kilbride said this year’s festival - the second to be held at the community-led cinema in Crosby - has been funded by The Prince’s Trust and has been developed with the help of a group of young people aiming to raise more awareness of the issues surrounding gay culture and relationships.

The screenings, running from Monday to Friday, are exclusively for school groups and young-people to attend. However, there will be a public screening of the hit film Weekend, which focuses on the UK's gay culture, on Sunday, November 13, to close the festival.

For information about time and tickets for the screening of Weekend on November 13 and other details of the OPEN festival, contact Plaza Community Cinema on 0151 4744076 or visit the festival website online at
