Streets get clean sweep
by Henry James

LITTLE Digmoor residents have worked together to clean up their estate in a week of action.

More than 70 people joined forces with the borough council and members of the West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership for the community clean-up project during half term.

Adults and children took part in litter picks, removal of detritus and helping their neighbours cleaning garages and gardens. Community skips were also provided thanks to funding from the Fairshare project and CSP. During the four-day period more than 25 tonnes of waste was removed.

A Re-Use Swap Shop was also held at the FOLD Centre to allow people to recycle any unwanted items they had too good to go into a skip. Local businesses also helped out by donating products for use by the local community. Prizes were handed out to youngsters who took part in the fancy dress litter pick and treasure hunt.

Councillor Val Hopley, cabinet member for community safety, said: “It’s great that many local residents are working together to make Little Digmoor a cleaner and safer place to live and work.

”This week follows on from the success of the Beatsweep event in Skelmersdale during the summer and hopefully it is something that can be repeated in the future.

“These projects help residents to get to know each other and by working together help to sustain the community spirit in Skelmersdale.”
