Extra time allowed for debate on drainage
by Natasha Young

THE Environment Agency will hold an extra drop in session in Southport tomorrow (Thursday, November 24), as part of a consultation on proposals to scale back drainage pumping in the Lower Alt and Crossens area.

The session, being held at St Cuthbert's Church Hall in Churchtown from 2-7.15pm, has been welcomed by councillors Simon Shaw and John Dodd, who had campaigned for the level of consultation to be increased in the Crossens area.

The drop in sessions, which allow residents and stakeholders to discuss the proposals with the Environment Agency, have already taken place in Formby and Halsall but Meols ward Liberal Democrat, Cllr Dodd, said: “You have to understand that within living memory we have had flooding of some homes in Crossens from the pumped watercourses, so this is an issue of serious concern.

”The Crossens Pumping Station is one the two main facilities for the whole catchment area and there is talk of reducing capacity there. The two original meetings, in Formby and Halsall, were of little use to the residents I represent.“

Sefton Council's environmental cabinet member, Cllr Shaw, added: ”All along I have thought it is vital that councillors and concerned residents get some clear guarantees that this does not mean any greater risk of flooding in built-up areas. That’s certainly what I have been asking the Environment Agency myself.“
