Sparkling comeback
by David Simister

A VILLAGE society has made a sparkling return to action with a Christmas lights switch-on next week.

Rufford Village Society said that after receiving grants from the borough and county councils, they are looking forward to switching on the lights next Wednesday (December 7) at 7pm.

Residents will be invited to sing carols round a Christmas tree, accompanied by musicians from Bishop Rawstone CE Academy Band. There will also be refreshments in St Mary's Church Hall with mince pies, mulled wine and (Rufford made) Fiddlers Lancashire Crisps on offer.

Society member Alex Garden said: “The society is back in action after a ten-year break. Councillor Jane Houlgrave has spoken to many residents who expressed how much they valued the work done by the original village society, for example planting daffodils, organising village events, improving the street scene and providing Christmas lights and festivities.

”The first task of the new society has been to raise funds for some Christmas lights and a switch-on event in the village. Jane successfully advised the committee on the applications and grants. In addition, generous donations have been received from Rufford Pharmacy, Rufford Giant Boot Sale, Central Garage, Rufford Veterinary Practice, Alsley Lodge Residential Care Home and St Mary’s Marina.

“The lights will decorate a tree on the grass verge in front of Rufford Pharmacy on the A59 from December 7 until January 6.”

The Rufford Village Society meets once a month in St Mary’s Church Hall on Church Rd, with the next meeting due to take place on Friday, January 20, at 7.30pm. For further information please contact David Walmsley 01704 821234.
