Volunteers wanted for canal clean-up
by David Simister

IF you enjoy boating, walking or fishing along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, you can help with a clean-up.

A canal users' group is hoping local residents will join them at Rufford for a litter picking event next Saturday (February 11).

Group member Karl Hamilton said: “There were a few of us who have boats at both St Mary's Marina and at Fettlers Wharf, and quite a few people in the local community, who set up the group because we're very keen to keep the canal looking as clean as possible. Over the last few months in particular, parts of the canal have ended up looking quite tatty.

”While we can't do everything, we work with British Waterways as much as possible to help them out with the little jobs along the canal, because it makes a big difference. That's why we're very keen to get as many people along as possible to the event, which will focus on litter picking along the canal.“

Volunteers are asked to meet The Ship Inn on the morning of the litter pick, where they will travel northward along the Rufford branch of the waterway, picking up litter along the way. A second group will start simultaneously in Sollom.

Rufford councillor Jane Houlgrave, who said she had noticed significant improvements along the canal over a short period of time.

”I am encouraged to see people taking responsibility for its well-being and I applaud Karl for this initiative.“
