Pub conversion scheme blocked
by David Simister

A BID to turn a West Lancashire village's only pub into two houses has been blocked by councillors even though work at the site has already started.

Members of the borough council's planning committee decided at a meeting last Thursday (May 18) that work at the site of the now-closed Crawford Arms should not be allowed to go ahead, despite preliminary construction work at the Crawford Road pub has already gone ahead.

The Champion approached the applicant to ask whether they planned to appeal the committee's decision, reapply for permission or stop work at the site, but they had not responded to requests for a comment before this week's edition had gone to press.

The borough council's planning officers last week recommended that permission for the site should be refused, arguing that Crawford is not a part of West Lancashire which in need of any extra housing.

Nearby residents also got in touch to voice their concerns about the potential loss of the village's only pub, and contacted the council to highlight their worries that work had already started without the necessary planning permission being granted.

Margaret Walker was one of the residents who got in touch about the pub, and said: “When the pub was open it was definitely the focal point of the village - we had weddings, birthday parties, Christmas celebrations, we had everything there.

”Crawford used to have all sorts of facilities for the residents who lived there. Now all it's got is a bin collection, and I'm surprised we've still got that. The village seems to have been completely forgotten.“

The Champion has been running a series to help promote West Lancashire's pubs, called Champion Your Local. If you've got a story about your local pub you'd like to share get in touch by sending an email to or call 01704 392404.
