Village gardens open to celebrate Diamond Jubilee
by Henry James

THE Birkdale Village Gardens were open last weekend to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

They are a collection of private gardens whose owners open them up to the public each summer for charity and this year a share of the proceeds will contribute to the refurbishment and extension of Southport Cancer Centre.

The scheme will be running again on July 1 and July 15 from 10.30am till 5.30pm and a list when each particular garden will be taking part is shown below.

Margaret and Geoff Fletcher of Saxon Road have been opening their garden as part of the National Garden Scheme for ten years now and have received a specially engraved trowel in recognition of their efforts (see picture).

Each garden has its own unique character be it cottage garden, vegetable and fruit plot or a quirky large family garden full of reclaimed materials. There’s also a low lying suburban garden inland from the dunes and a walled garden open with an increasing array of tender plants and informal island beds. Organisers have said there’s plenty to see and be inspired by. Home grown plants, shrubs and climbers will also be on sale for bargain prices.

Visitors will be able to relax in shady spots, enjoy the “friendly” atmosphere and indulge in some homemade cakes, biscuits and summer fruits.

The list of when each garden is taking part in the scheme is:

14 Saxon Road (Sunday, July 1; Sunday, July 15)

10 Meadow Ave (Sunday, July 1; Sunday, July 15)

23 Ashton Road (Sunday, July 15)

47 Westbourne Road (Sunday, July 1)

Maple Tree Cottage, 22 Hartley Crescent (Sunday, July 1)

There is a combined admission charge of £4.

They all open as part of The National Gardens Scheme where amateur gardeners are encouraged to show off their borders, lawns, shrubs and vegetable plots to the public for charity.
