Family's pet dog attacked in Birkdale park
by David Simister

A SOUTHPORT woman has spoken of her family's shock after their dog was attacked by a loose German Shephard on their afternoon out in a Birkdale park.

Susan Rimmer said she and other members of her family, including two young children, were enjoying a walk through Bedford Park when Dolly, their two-year-old cavachon dog, was suddenly attacked by another dog, in a traumatising incident which caused one of the children to nearly pass out in shock.

She told The Champion: “ Our family were having a lovely afternoon in Bedford Park. My nine-year-old son, Thomas was having a great time, running around with the dog, flying his kite and playing football with his cousins. At about 6pm that evening we sat near the exercise equipment when a brownish red coloured alsation came towards us. It headed straight for Dolly, and from then then the nightmare began.

”Dolly was in the alsation's mouth, the dog's teeth around our dog's neck. My son who was distraught was pulled away by my sister-in-law while we desperately tried to save our dog. Eventually, the alsation let go and Dolly fell to the ground gasping for breath. She had blood around her neck and was obviously very shocked, as we all were. My son came over to see if Dolly was ok to which I replied that she was but very shocked. My son almost passed out and I managed to hold on to him before he collapsed. I lay him on the ground until he recovered.“

Mrs Rimmer's four-year-old granddaughter was carried away from the scene by a relative, while the family managed to restrain the German Shephard until police arrived at the scene. The family's cavachon was treated at a vet's surgery in Ormskirk for four puncture wounds sustained in the attack.

The family told The Champion they understand the German Shephard is now being looked after by an RSPCA centre and that efforts to trace its owner have so far been unsuccessful.

Merseyside Police confirmed that officers had attended the attack, and said: Merseyside Police can confirm a report was received on Monday, July 30 that a dog had been attacked by another dog in Birkdale. At about 6.15pm a report was received from a member of the public that an Alsatian-type dog had attacked another dog in Bedford Park.

”The Alsatian-type dog was reported not to have been on a lead and was roaming free. The dog was detained by a member of the public prior to being collected by a police patrol and taken to a police station. The dog was subsequently collected by local authority dog wardens.“
