Rider dies two weeks before 21st birthday
by Henry James

A MOTORCYCLIST seriously injured in a crash in Bickerstaffe has since died just two weeks before his 21st birthday.

Steven Rigby, from Kirkby, was riding Liverpool Road when he collided with a telegraph pole near to the Mossock Hall Golf Club.

Police have appealed for witnesses for the accident on Tuesday afternoon (August 7).

The 20-year-old, who had been working in Skelmersdale, was taken to Aintree Hospital, where he died on Sunday.

Steven Rigby's family paid the following tribute:“Steven, a time served joiner, was working as a wood machinist at Brook’s Brothers in Skelmersdale where he was a dedicated, hard working and valued employee.

”Steven had not had a day off in the two years he had worked there! Steven, a kind-hearted and much loved young man who enjoyed playing the guitar, was a devoted son and brother and will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

“Steven was a true ‘gentle giant' who was respected and loved by everyone who knew him.”

Officers investigating are appealing in particular to the driver of a red Vauxhall estate car who they believe was passing at the time of the collision.

Sgt Finn Quainton from the Road Policing Unit said: “We are really keen to speak to the driver of a red Vauxhall estate type car that was seen in the area at the time of the collision as we believe they could be a key witness.

”If you were the driver or a passenger in that car, I would urge you to contact us, even if you do not believe you have any information that might help, if that was your car, we would be keen to hear from you.

“My wider appeal for anyone else who may have been in the area at the time and who may have seen anything either at the time of or prior to the collision still stands and I would ask anyone with any information to get in touch if they have not done so already.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police by calling 101 and quoting log number LC-20120807-0970.
