Former hotel owner Ena is 100 years old
by Natasha Young

BIRKDALE Park resident Ena Nixson was surrounded by relatives last week, as she celebrated her 100th birthday.

The centenarian, who was born in Burnley but moved to to Ainsdale in her early twenties, enjoyed a visit from daughters Ann and Avril and son-in-law Mark and received a card from the Queen.

Ena moved to Birkdale Park Nursing Home earlier this year due to increasing fragility, but had enjoyed socialising and dancing whenever she could, and was also a keen traveller.

After World War II she once owned Southport's Washington Hotel on the Promenade, which she ran with husband Tommy until he died in 1963.

The hotel has since been demolished and replaced with an apartment block called Washington Court.
