Serene image wins prize
by David Simister

THIS serene shot of a swan paddling through the waters at Martin Mere has just won a West Lancashire man a top prize in a photography competition.

Rufford man Paul Jarvis, won the wetland wildlife category of the WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre summer photography competition after capturing the shot earlier this year, and will be treated to a three-day workshop in the Czech Republic to help him hone his skills by taking pictures of birds of prey.

“The reflection was like a mirror, and the light was nice in the morning,” he said of the winning image.

The competition, which is part of a year-long contest running across the nine reserves across the UK run by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, which runs Martin Mere. Mr Jarvis, who has previously won another round of the contest, will join Tatra Photography for the three day workshop in the Czech national park, as well being entered into the contest's grand final for the chance for a once-in-a-lifetime photography trip to Antarctica.

A spokesperson for the WWT said: “This is actually Paul's second win as he also won the autumn heat competition. So he will automatically be entered into the grand prize which is a 12 day all inclusive holiday to the Antarctica.

“The competition has ran for a year and has just had its final winners from the summer heat announced. The five winners from each season will now go on to the national competition along with the winners from the other wetlands. WWT Martin Mere, along, with the other eight centres provide the inspiration to take great photographs, as shown from Mr Jarvis’s picture.”
