Businessman brings experience to role
by David Simister

A BUSINESSMAN aims to use his experience to help a Merseyside health trust after he was appointed to the board.

Gerry O’Keeffe, from Mawdesley, becomes a non-executive director designate on the board of Mersey Care NHS Trust, and was keen to use his experience of working for several of the company's top IT firms.

Mr O'Keefe, 60, said: “I’m delighted to be joining Mersey Care. Many people are affected by mental health issues and this Trust has a massive challenge in meeting the needs and expectations of all those who use our services. I myself had a major heart attack 12 years ago in the Lake District and had it not been for the excellent facilities and care I received from the NHS I wouldn’t be here today.”

“I hope the experience I have gained in business, particularly around transformational change, improving client satisfaction and looking for new areas of growth, will be of use to helping the Mersey Care Board both now and in the future.”

Mersey Care Chairman Beatrice Fraenkel said: “We are very lucky to have someone with Gerry’s experience of working at such a senior level to contribute to the Board’s decision-making role in overseeing the strategic work of Mersey Care here on Merseyside.”

Mersey Care provides specialist mental health, learning disability and some addiction services in Sefton, Liverpool and Kirkby, as well as regional and high secure mental health services such as Ashworth Hospital in Maghull. Locally the Trust runs hospitals at the Hesketh Centre and Boothroyd Unit in Southport, as well as caring for thousands of people through community mental health teams in Southport and Formby, Crosby, Waterloo and Bootle.
