Probe launched after police car lands in ditch
by David Simister

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a police car ended up on its side in a ditch in Scarisbrick after ploughing off a country lane.

Merseyside Police confirmed that a marked police vehicle, a BMW X5, was damaged after running off Wyke Lane between Churchtown and Scarisbrick, at around 5.30pm last Sunday evening (October 14).

An eyewitness told The Champion he saw flashing blue lights from another police car at the scene of the crash.

The witness added: “I went to have a look later, and while I knew it was going to be a vehicle that had come off the road. I wasn't expecting it to be a police vehicle that had gone into the ditch.

“The impact had caused a large amount of earth to be moved by the vehicle when it came off the road.”

Police told the Champion that two officers in the vehicle, who were responding to a call at the time, suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash and have since been discharged from hospital.

Merseyside Police told The Champion that it was unable to reveal how much the damage to the vehicle had cost the force, due to an investigation into the vehicle and the incident still being under way.

A spokesperson for the force said yesterday: “Merseyside Police can confirm that an internal investigation is under way

after a police vehicle sustained damaged in Churchtown on Sunday afternoon (Sunday, 14 October).

“At about 4.30pm a marked police response vehicle, a BMX X5, was responding to a call and travelling along Wyke Lane when it left the carriageway and entered a ditch.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 101.
