Preston North End to pay tribute to Tarleton footballer Mike Jones
by David Simister

AS THIS week's edition of The Champion went to press one of the region's best known football teams was paying a touching tribute to a talented player from Tarleton.

Preston North End showed a picture of Mike Jones, who died in New York last month, on the big screen at its Deepdale ground while a tribute speech was read out ahead of the club's game against Carlisle United.

Mike Jones, 25, who was fatally stabbed on a Manhatten street on October 7, taught the Lilywhites’ disability team before he moved to the USA to work as a youth coach for the New York Red Bulls.

A funeral in remembrance of the former Hesketh Bank FC and Tarleton Corinthians player was held in Tarleton on Friday, October 26.
