Marshside school to mark three decades of dance
by Natasha Young

A SOUTHPORT dancing school has lined up a host of events as it celebrates its 30th anniversary year.

Marshside School of Dance (MSD) was set up by Wendy and Ron Hargreaves in 1983, and the couple “didn't envisage it growing to the size it did”.

But three decades on, the school has been popular with dancers of all ages and has some successful alumni.

Wendy told the Champion: “We have for many years been awarded the title of Medalist School of the Year for both ballroom and Latin American dancing and are proud to have taught to such a standard.

”Many pupils moved on to the competitive scene and did very well. We are proud most keep in touch and come back to see us.

“Jaclyn Spencer, who was for five years the World Salsa Champion partnered by her fiance Chris Marques, started with MSD and is now a member of the ‘Strictly' team.”

To mark the school's anniversary, it is currently preparing to host a buffet dance event at the town's Prince of Wales Hotel on March 17.

British ballroom champions Kyle Taylor and Polina Shklyaeva will be demonstrating together with Latin American champions Andrew Escolme and Amy Baker on the night, followed by a buffet, dancing and singing to the voice of Steve Donoghue.

Members of the Allied Dancing Association Council, including the general secretary and president, will also be in attendance.

Tickets are priced £10 for MSD and ex MSD members and half price for under 10s at £5. The standard ticket price is £15.

The event will be followed by the Allied Dancing Association president's dinner dance at Southport Floral Hall on May 4.

Further celebrations will also take place throughout the rest of the year.
