Chess success for pupils at Aughton school
by David Simister

TALENTED chess players at one West Lancashire school are congratulating this week after making it to the semi finals of a national tournament.

You might remember The Champion reported just before Christmas that pupils at Aughton St Michael's Primary School were enjoying the school's long-running chess club, and now some of those young players have successfully qualified for the semi finals of the National Primary Schools' Chess Tournament.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Aughton St. Michael's School annually hosts a qualifying round of this competition which sees schools from across the region competing against one another.

”Each year for the past 15 years St. Michael's teams have qualified for the semi finals which are held at Pontins in Prestatyn.“

The club has also previously entered a series of tournaments organised by Lancashire Chess, which has seen pupils Rachel Cass winning £1,000 as one of the country's top young players, while Lauren Cornwell picked up £155 in prize money after defeating her rivals.

The club, which has been run by Year Six teacher Ian Hughes for the last 15 years is held during lunchtimes and after school with regular Saturday coaching by Steve Lamb from Lancashire Chess, assisted by two former pupils Rachel and Natalie Cass both of whom are England Junior Internationals.
