Light-hearted historic tale set for Burscough Wharf
by David Simister

A BATTLE between the kings of England and France which took place centuries ago is the subject of a comedy play being performed in Burscough next month.

The Angus & Ross Theatre Company will bring their family-friendly show, Kings of Cloth of Gold, to Burscough Wharf of March 21, giving residents the chance to encounter a light-hearted take on European history as part of the show's 50 date tour across the UK.

The show imagines the historic encounter in 1520 between the kings of England and France, with Henry VIII played by Dominic Goodwin and Francis I played by Emanuel Brierley, who each try to outdo each other with increasingly hilarious displays of vanity and wealth on the French battlefield. Each monarch is proud, intelligent, and the epitome of chivalry, but you'll have to see the show to discover which wins the battle of vanity.

Director Em Whitfield Brooks said of the show: “We are delighted to have had the chance of working with the Royal Armouries, who’ve given us so much advice and expertise in the telling of this important story.

”Inspired by the Tournament Room at Royal Armouries Leeds, our designer Ruth Paton has worked closely with staff to make sure we honour the historical accuracy, and our actors trained with their fight directors. It’s very exciting to work so closely with the real experts on bringing this moment in history to life.“

For more information about the show, which starts at 7.30pm at the arts centre at the wharf, and to book tickets, visit either or call 01695 576844.
