Community groups set to save Civic Hall
by David Simister

ORMSKIRK Civic Hall looks set to be saved from closure after the borough council confirmed it is working with a community group to help secure the site's future.

The local authority is working with parties interested in taking over the St Helens Road site, which had faced falling into disuse due to financial cuts.

The council says it has received “very positive enquiries” about the Ormskirk venue, and is now hoping to sign a similar deal for the Ashurst Meeting Rooms in Skelmersdale.

Councillor David Sudworth, portfolio holder for Health, Leisure and Community Safety, said: “I am pleased that we are talking to groups that are interested in taking over the operation and full management of Ormskirk Civic Hall.

”I hope more organisations will come forward to talk to us about taking the same role at Ashurst Meeting Room.“

The council confirmed last October that it was looking for groups to take over the running of both sites, albeit at a peppercorn rent, as part of efforts by the local authority to shave more than £500,000.

Both sites, however, faced being closed altogether next month if nobody came forward to run the site.

The borough council has said it is still accepting expressions of interest about Ashurst Meeting Rooms until April 12. The facilities are being offered to community organisations to manage on a lease where the organisation would be responsible for the repairs. It would be a very low cost long-term lease, for a minimum of 25 years.
