Water supply hit by burst
by David Simister

WEST Lancashire residents have been putting up with poor water pressure this week due to a burst pipe, United Utilities have confirmed today.

Champion readers in Burscough, Tarleton, Hesketh Bank and Scarisbrick were among those who got in touch after experiencing several days of low water pressure, which the water provider has now said has been caused by a burst water main in the Scarisbrick area.

United Utilities said it apologised to residents affected, but added that due to the depth of the pipe and the scale of the work the repair work would be “challenging”.

Stuart Atkinson, the company's water network manager, said: “We're sorry for the problems people may be noticing with low water pressure in parts of West Lancashire. Our engineers are dealing with a burst water main at Scarisbrick. This is a large main and repairs are challenging due to the depth of the pipe. We are having to dig 20 feet down to reach the pipe which involves major ground stabilisation measures to protect the workers. We will have a better idea of the timescale for repairs this evening when we expose the pipe and assess the damage.

”Meanwhile our team is adjusting pressure valves in the area to maximise the flows to local customers. The issue is mainly causing a problem only at the peak demand time of day - early in the morning. We will get the pipe fixed as soon as we can and we thank people for their patience in the meantime.“
