School on top form!
by David Simister

YOUNGSTERS at a Lydiate school have achieved a string of success at a series of events they have held over the past few weeks, staff there have said.

Among the achievements by pupils at St Thomas' Church of England School are the victories of the Year Four and Five swimmers, who won first place in an inter-school swimming gala in Crosby, while Year 3 pupils managed to raise £70 for charity by having a book sale and bakery event at the Kenyons Lane school.

Meanwhile nearby residents would have been treated to a surreal sight when pupils persuaded their parents to ditch the school run and let them ride their bikes to school, with the youngsters dressing up as Willy Wonka, Harry Potter and a chicken among others to help promote a nationwide event called ‘The Big Pedal' earlier this month.

Mark Ward, assistant headteacher, said: “'We usually only ever have a few cyclists but it was great to see nearly the whole school turning up on their bikes, especially in their costumes!”

Finally, aspiring athletes have seen success in the a gymnastics contest hosted by Chesterfield High School, where after a close competition against nearby schools now go on to represent Maghull, Aintree and Crosby in the Merseyside Schools Gymnastics Competition being held in Crosby this Friday (March 22).
