Fund boost helps firm to keep local base
by David Simister

A WEST Lancashire firm which its entrepeneurial founder began in his bedroom has been given a funding boost by one of Britain's biggest banks.

Massams Supplies, based in Halsall, said he has been loaned funds by Natwest to buy a new site at Renacres Farm to help consolidate the firm's existing sites as it grows, meaning that the company is able to grow its business while keeping itself based in the borough.

Mr Massam said this week: “We’ve seen so many businesses move away from the local area to industrial sites and this has really hit the local economy – we think it’s important to keep local jobs in the area and our new site will allow us to do just that. We are so excited to move forward and grow the business. We now have three acres to work from as opposed to three quarters of an acre.”

The West Lancashire entrepeneur began his business from the bedroom of his house with wife Janet back in 1988 after he spotted a niche in the landscaping market. The company has continued to grow despite the recession, and now has sites in Winchester and Devon alongside its West Lancashire home. Massams has diversified, distributing its supplies to landscape designers, city councils and golf courses, and also focuses on seasonal business such as selling Christmas trees, firewood and coal in the winter.

Jim Moore, the bank's senior relationship director said: “Massams is a fantastic business with a huge potential for growth. They deliver the very best service and with the purchase of their own distribution head quarters, I can see nothing but success for the future of this company.

”We’re lending over £100m a day to UK SMEs, providing new loans to over 4,000 businesses a week.“

Massams Supplies will move into its new home at Renacres Farm later this summer.
