Family's distress at soiled gravestone
by David Simister

A MELLING man has spoken of his horror after he and his family discovered a gravestone belonging to a deceased relative had been left covered in dog excrement.

Chris Draycott said he and members of his family paid a visit to the Church of St Thomas, on Rock Lane, to pay their respects to a deceased relative on Mothers' Day, but was shocked to discover excreement on the gravestone, which he believes had been left by dogs let off their leads by owners walking through the cemetery area.

He told The Champion: “On arrival there are notices that dogs should not be exercised not on a lead. When we arrived at our location to our horror the gravestone was covered in dog excrement. While we were there another person exercising their dog not on a lead arrived. The dog immediately fouled another gravestone with no reaction from its handler.

”To lose a loved one is bad enough but to have ones memorial deffacated and urinated on by dogs not on a lead is innexcusable. I wonder how they would feel if I did this to their memorial to a loved one. Could anyone attending St Thomas's or and other cemetery bear this in mind if excersising their dog off a lead.“

The Champion contacted The Church of St Thomas, who declined to comment on the issue. However, the church did point out that it had received a complaint about a single dog, and that Sefton Council's dog wardens team and the neighbourhood policing team had been made aware of the matter.
