Stables get new lease of life
by David Simister

BUSINESSES which have helped to bring a long-disused Burscough stable back to life after setting up base there have been praised by the borough council.

The local authority said firms which have set up shop in the Old Stables complex on Mill Lane have helped to make it a thriving centre for business, and that tenants had taken “great pride” in the site, which had previously been empty and unused for years.

Councillor Adrian Owens, the council's portfolio holder for regeneration, said: “I am very impressed with the efforts of the tenants at the stables to brighten up the stables.

”They have made the complex an excellent place to work and do business.“

Among the tenants who have set up their business bases at the stables site are a craftsman producing stained glass windows, a woodworker who creates accessories for barges and boats, a ropeworker who makes boat fenders, and a canal costume designer, while a transport company has also established a local office in the building.

Kathleen Webster, who was one of the first tenants to move in when she set up her clothing alteration and rug-making business there last July, said: ”We have worked hard to improve the appearance of the stables and our customers are very impressed.

“Now that it is nearly full, this site is a great place to do business.”

There is now only one vacant unit at the stables and the council said it is in negotiation with a number of parties interested in taking over the lease.

The stables were built around the start of the twentieth century to provide stabling for the horses that pulled barges down the Leeds Liverpool Canal.
