Family dog attacks 16-month-old toddler
by David Raven

A 16-MONTH-OLD toddler suffered head injuries after he was attacked by the family dog.

The incident occurred yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, April 23) at around 12.40pm on Salisbury Avenue, where the child was taken to hospital for treatment with injuries to his head.

The dog, which is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier – a legal breed – has been signed over by the family to be humanely destroyed.

But because the dog is a legal breed and the incident happened on private property, no criminal charges can be made under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

A police spokesperson said: “Merseyside Police can confirm that officers were called to a property in Bootle to a report a child had been bitten by a dog.

”At about 12.40pm emergency services were called to a property on Salisbury Avenue following a report that a family dog had bitten a 16-month-old boy.

“Paramedics attended and found the child with injuries to his head. He has been taken to hospital for treatment.

”The family have agreed to sign over the dog, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, to be humanely destroyed.“
