Danny's romantic proposal is a first for historic church
by Danielle Thompson

LOVE was in the air when a local church staged a family fun day to celebrate a special milestone.

Parishioner Danny Harris decided that the event, at Cottage Lane Mission Evangelical Church in Ormskirk, would be the perfect occasion to pop the question to long-term partner, Naomi Mathers.

And church minister, Neil Rees was delighted to play ‘host' to another special occasion.

He said: “Cottage Lane Mission has seen many things in its 125 years of history but never a marriage proposal.

”Still, there's a first time for everything and the Family Fun Day was just that occasion.“

The church staged the free Family Fun Day, offering a variety of entertainments for children and cream teas for the adults, to celebrate its anniversary by doing something for local families.

Neil added: ”Rain was unable to dampen the occasion and the afternoon saw a constant stream of visitors, and as he stood in the car park before going in, Danny whispered to us that he was planning to go down on bended knee and ‘pop the question.'

“True to his word while the kids were enjoying the bouncy castle, face-painting, tin can alley and other activities, he crept up on Naomi in the main hall.

”Naomi, of course, had no idea of what was going to happen next, and out from his pocket came a ring box as he went down on one knee in front of her.

“Her face turned from total surprise to embarrassment to delight as she realised what was happening.

”Amidst the noise of the music we didn't hear her response, but judging by the passionate embrace that followed, we guess she must have said yes!“
