Library closures 'discrimination' |
by Ollie Cowan |
A GAUNTLET has been thrown down to any resident or councilor who believes that Sefton Council is discriminating against the people of Southport and Ainsdale over library provisions.
Anyone who believes the authority is discriminating against the resort’s condemned libraries can sue the council and see how far they get, according to a response from Cabinet Member Ian Moncur at a recent council meeting.
Councillor Moncur made the defiant stand at last week’s meeting (Thursday September 5) after responding to a formal question put to him by Ainsdale Lib Dem councillor Haydn Preece.
Councillor Preece asked: “Does the Cabinet Member accept that by making Woodvale residents walk twice as far to get to a Library as any resident of Bootle has to walk to a Library, the Sefton Council is guilty of unfair discrimination?”
Cllr Moncur denied the accusation with an authoritative “No” before challenging anyone who thinks the council is discriminatory.
Council meetings are well known to become heated as councilors passionately debate a number of local subjects and issues.
Councillor Preece, along with a number of other councilors from North Sefton have continued to fight for the survival of Ainsdale, Birkdale and Churchtown libraries.
All three have been affected by funding cuts and a number of avenues are being looked into to try and keep them running in some capacity.
