Join Opsta in their fight to restore the Burscough Curves rail link
by Tom Martin

It was interesting to read the letter from Ged Wright who states that Southport Labour Party are keen to support reinstatement of the Burscough Rail Curves.

It might be of interest to Mr Wright that there is an organisation, OPSTA, who have been fighting for this important rail link to be restored or many years.

As a member of the OPSTA committee, I can reveal that we are certainly hopeful that the south curve - that is the curve that would veer south towards Ormskirk, thus allowing trains from Southport to travel through Ormskirk - might be re-connected in the future.

The north curve that would allow trains to run through to Preston, without reversal, is unfortunately not seen to be viable in the foreseeable future because of costly infrastructure replacement that would be required.

The restoration of the south curve will not happen tomorrow, but is something that we continue to fight for at all levels - with some degree of success.

If the Southport Labour Party are really serious about improving our town's transport links, it would probably be more beneficial if they were to join thus established group and fight alongside us to bring about this and other transport improvements in the area.

It is probably the easiest way for any political party to score points by writing to a newspaper and say that they support and local initiative.

What isn't so easy - but is more worthwhile, is to actually get involved and do something about it - rather than trade off the efforts of others.

Terry Durrance.
