Meet Liverpool's karate kid
by Tom Martin

A NETHERTON girl has helped England win a world karate championship at the Echo Arena.

Rebecca Morrison, 17, was part of a three-person Cadet Female Team and together they took home the honours at the World Shotokan Karate Association (WSKA) tournament held over the weekend.

The competition, which is held every two years, meant athletes from over 28 countries turned up in Liverpool to fight in a range of different age and gender groups.

And the deciding round in the Cadet group was against Poland and Rebecca had to claim the vital points in a tense finale that saw England finish top of the group.

Proud dad, George Morrison, said: “I'm at karate coach and Rebecca first got into the sport through my interest.

”She started training in karate at the age of eight and she now trains at Netherton Activity Centre as well as Kirby.

“But to be selected for England is fantastic and it wasn't easy because she had to go through a lot of training in order to be picked.

Rebecca, who is currently studying at sixth form, was part of a team that also included Nicole Donahue, from St Helens, and Beth Nicholson, from Sunderland.

The England team is part of the Karate Union of Great Britain and they had to beat USA, Russia and Poland to finish top of the group – but George claims that his daughter is already looking ahead.

”It was exciting because England faced Poland in the decider and Rebecca fought last from her team.

“She had to win so the pressure was on but she managed to do it and the crowd watching was ecstatic!”

“She is now hoping to be selected for the European Championships at the end of October and that will be held in Portugal”.
