New barbers revives memories of 'Spoff'
by Tom Martin

A BARBER has brought an old building in Seaforth back to life and reopened it as a barbers in memory of a well known previous owner who is said to have died while cutting a client's hair.

Jay Cross, 27, has refurbished the property, on Bridge Road, and put up a new sign with the name ‘Spofforth Barbers' in memory of the legendary ‘Spoff.'

Spoff was a well known barber in the local community, and is believed to have died from a heart attack around 14 years ago whilst cutting a client's hair.

Now Jay wants to recapture his memories not only with the name of the new shop, but also the interior.

He is appealing for anyone with pictures of Spoff to come forward so he can hang them up inside for future customers to view.

He said: “Everyone I've spoke to in the area know or have heard of Spoff and his business.

”It could be that they came here in the past to get their hair cut or they had children or parents who knew him.

“I want to bring back the old name because everyone will recognise it.

”An idea could be to put up old pictures of him on the walls so if anyone has any that would be great“.

Jay has been a barber for the last ten years and worked at Waterloo Barber Shop before he decided to open up a store of his own in Seaforth.

The last company who used the property was a beauty salon called Polly's and they have now moved up the road.

Jay added: ”The refurbishment has been finished and I'm looking forward to the opening.

“It will just be me at the moment but in the future I am hoping to hire staff and also open up more barbers in other areas.”

The revamped barbers is set to open on Monday, October, 21.
