Pupils say 'stop' to parents who smoke
by Tom Martin

SCHOOL children have been encouraging their parents to quit smoking during ‘Stoptober' with hundreds of people across the Sefton already signed up to challenge.

The 28-day stop smoking effort ran throughout October and youngsters drove home the ‘stop' message to their parents.

Pupils from Our Lady of Walsingham primary school, Netherton, joined ‘lollipop man' Patrick Fairclough during his morning crossing patrol to raise awareness of the campaign among parents.

A giant 'Stop’ disk has been seen across the borough and SUPPORT, Sefton's local stop smoking service, helped residents with advice and tips to help them quit.

Figures suggest there are currently more than 40,000 smokers in Sefton.

The Stoptober campaign aims to help people quit for 28 days and research suggests that smokers who give up for four weeks are five times more likely to kick the habit for good.

Cllr Paul Cummins, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Older People and Health, said: “If you have been thinking about quitting, now is the time to do it. It isn't always an easy journey but, with the help of friends, family and the SUPPORT service, everyone can help each other to reduce the number of smokers in Sefton.”

Bernie Sheils, Headteacher of Our Lady of Walsingham, said: “We are keen to support this Public Health message as it is important for our children not to start smoking as they grow older and for their parent’s to quit.”
